Putnam mixed six birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey as he shot one of seven sub-par rounds in the 84-player field. Putnam was at 6-under 207 through three rounds and had a great chance to join his brother, Michael, as a winner. Michael Putnam won the last Pacific Coast Amateur at Eugene Country Club, in 2004.
UCLA junior Alex Kim was alone in second at 1 under after a 2-over 73. Three golfers were tied for third at even par, including University of Oregon teammates Daniel Miernicki and Eugene Wong.
Miernicki made five bogeys to go with two birdies in a 3-over 37 on the front nine, but rallied with a back-nine 35. Wong mixed four birdies with six bogeys and shot 73.
Other instate college golfers who had been contention struggled. Oregon senior Isaiah Telles shot 77 and fell into a tie for 19th, and his teammate Andrew Vijarro shot 82 and fell to a 32nd-place tie. Recent Oregon State graduate Paul Petterson shot 77 and joined Telles in 19th.
The final round begins Friday at 7:30 a.m., with the leaders teeing off at 9:40 a.m.
